Journal entry two from my conversation with Nicola Scott on her podcast The Refreshing Change is on managing your mind. You can listen to this section of our discussion, along with some accompanying thoughts, below. You can also listen to the full episode on Apple, Spotify or at nicolascottcoaching.com.
Two • On Managing Your Mind
The nature of managing the mind is, to me, deeply practical.
Fundamentally, is about action - physical, mental, emotional action. But before we can take action we must first become aware.
Aware of how our minds behave in any given set of circumstances or any given moment as a result of internal and/or external stimulus. Without awareness we can take no action, and hence we cannot manage, because we are not conscious of what there is to be managed.
Many people will live entire lifetimes without becoming consciously aware of what they are truly thinking, let alone why they may be thinking it (or ‘who’ is doing the thinking…).
Through mindfulness, through meditation, thought spirituality - through experience - each of us can reach a state of conscious responsiveness to whatever thought, emotion or feeling arises in the mind. Responding by doing the things that we come to know work for us.
To me, this state is the consequence of a well understood and a well managed mind.
MYM Journal discussion points from The Refreshing Change
This was recorded before I launched MYM as a practice - at the time, it was only an idea with a fledgling podcast (How To: Manage Your Mind). It was also before I undertook any formal training in mindfulness, meditation and hypnotherapy. How time flies…
Given the depth of conversation and how the ideas informed my thinking over the resulting 12 months I’m taking the opportunity to break it down into a series of MYM Journal entries landing with you on a Saturday morning for some light weekend consideration.
You’re always welcome here.
